It is designed to promote effective methods to engage new members in the union culture. A goal of this workshop will be to focus on educating our new members about the importance of the union movement and emphasize the importance of members assuming active roles in their union. Introducing new members to a culture of unionism is particularly important in a post-Janus environment. Best practices for implementation of a program and a buddy system will be discussed. Particularly important will be a full explanation of how to implement NYSUT’s new data procedures for new hires and new enrollees. These workshops are particularly important for local presidents, treasurers, new member coordinators or anyone else who will have responsibility for some aspect of your local’s new member induction process. This workshop will be repeated on June 26 and July 11.

Being a local president is an extremely difficult job and no one who becomes a local president is fully prepared for the job. That is especially true in a post-Janus environment. This workshop will provide new presidents the opportunity to meet with staff and other new local leaders for an overview of the roles and responsibilities of a local president as well as the services and support provided by the Regional Office and NYSUT. We will examine challenges and issues of concern to new local leaders and engage in discussion to assist and support you in being an effective local president. Among the subjects covered will be How to Manage Your Unmanageable Job, Dealing with Membership Issues in a Post-Janus World, Strategic Planning, Goal Setting and Establishing Priorities, Services Available from NYSUT and the Nassau Regional Office, Engaging Your Members to Build Local Power, Your Place in the NYSUT Governance Structure, Working with Your LRS, and Succession Planning.

Need Help Managing Your Student Loan Debt? (date to be announced)
More than 44 million people in the United States are struggling to make their monthly student loan payments, and millions more see economic and personal opportunities pass them by as they prioritize paying down their debt. Does this sound like you or someone you know?

Many of these people may qualify for free federal programs that can help reduce their monthly payments and eventually lead to student loan forgiveness, but these lifeline programs are significantly under-enrolled. In an effort to help our members get access to these programs, The Nassau Regional Office in conjunction with the American Federation of Teachers are proud to host a Student Debt Clinic which will provide information on how to enroll in Income-Driven Repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

With college costs skyrocketing to unprecedented levels, two categories of NYSUT members struggle to avoid being overwhelmed by student debt – newer members who recently attended or are currently enrolled in college or graduate programs and middle aged members whose children are now entering higher education. Unfortunately, many members confronting this problem are unaware of the resources available to them to help manage and mitigate student debt burdens. Both of our national organizations, AFT and NEA, offer debt relief counseling and assistance. This workshop will assist members to figure out how to manage the college debt nightmare.
